Authorities in Yorktown were alerted to a string of vandalism incidents that occurred in both town and private property.

Yorktown Supervisor Matt Slater and Police Chief Robert Noble released the following joint statement following the incidents early Saturday morning, Jan. 4:

"Four glass doors were shattered at the Yorktown Stage, a menorah was toppled at Veterans’ Field and multiple windows were broken at the John C. Hart Memorial Library.

"In addition, windows at the First Presbyterian Church and the St. Patrick's Old Stone Church were also destroyed. As soon as these criminal acts were discovered, the town government took immediate action."

The Yorktown Police Department opened an investigation and is currently collecting evidence and reviewing video of the immediate and surrounding areas.

"At this point, the incidents appear linked," the town's statement said. "Town personnel are repairing the damaged town facilities.

"The Town of Yorktown wholeheartedly condemns these hateful and disrespectful acts. We will attempt to identify and hold accountable those responsible to the fullest extent of the law.

"Destructive acts such as these have no place in Yorktown. They have no place in any community. We ask that our community assist our police department by sharing any information that may be helpful in the apprehension of those responsible for these crimes."

U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey, whose district in much of Westchester and all of Rockland includes Yorktown, said in a statement: “The vandalism in Yorktown is yet another example of hate that has no place in our community.

"These acts, especially during this difficult time of anti-Semitic violence, further heighten fear among our friends and neighbors.

"My heart is with those affected by this weekend’s incidents, and I will continue working to combat senseless hate.”
